The Water Cooler

Come join our community of educators dedicated to proactively finding ways to balance personal needs alongside professional ones.

The Water Cooler is an oasis away from the school “teacher lounge effect”, where frequently conversations spiral into complaints and well-intended actions spiral into insular navel gazing.

The Water Cooler is a place to pivot from complaining to proactive cultivation of what we need and love in education, including acknowledgement of what sucks. We just don’t stay there…

The Water Cooler does have community rules that anyone joining is asked to maintain. One purpose of this community is to protect a space where we can get on with the good stuff we love about education.

Purpose-FULL Pedagogy

I have long been frustrated with the common notion that pedagogy is something we do to people.

While it certainly is one way to approach things, I’m committed to a more ethical relationship between students and teachers. If we attempt to move on from thinking of students as vessels to be filled or locations into which we transport and deposit information, what does your pedagogy become? This is at the heart of the one-to-one and/or small, customizable cohort work I do with educators. We identify our assumptions about pedagogy; we explore how we are enacting those assumptions; and we ask how can I do this otherwise? Is it possible for me to enter into a more rich, meaningful, and ethical pedagogical relationship with my colleagues, students, curriculum, and world?

Enrollment in Purpose-FULL Pedagogy automatically enrolls you in The Water Cooler, our private community for committed educators.

Undercurrents

Curricular design is something nearly all educators need to do, but we oftentimes feel overly constrained by external demands.

This one-to-one or small, customized cohort approach allows us to take a deep dive into a curricular challenge of your choosing. We will explore the relationship between your curricular and pedagogical choices and consider aligning the two as a useful way to achieve a more rich, meaningful, and ethical approach to teaching.

Enrollment in Undercurrents automatically enrolls you in The Water Cooler, our private community for committed educators.

Frequently asked questions

While this in and of itself may be a very worthy goal for you, it is less connected for me to your internal motivations and more connected to addressing external demands. If, however, you feel they overlap, let’s talk!

Absolutely. Some of my favorite personal experiences in education have occurred in what is often called contexts of informal education. In fact, I welcome the creativity such educational opportunities provide for thinking about purpose and how what we do as educators can deepen our connection to it.

I am a certified secondary English Language Arts teacher with approximate 30 years of classroom teaching experience. I also teach advanced learners of English as an Additional Language. Finally, I love working with preservice and inservice educators. Secondary English teacher education is a primary component of my PhD in Curriculum, instruction, and Teacher Education from Michigan State University.

It’s an excellent place to start, particularly if you are struggling to stay well kindled, i.e. with burnout. Identifying these things can grow out of reconnecting to what made you passionate about teaching in the first place.
